Stopping Labrador Digging Problems

As many dog owners will know, dogs can be a four-legged furry destructive force when let loose in your backyard. From digging up your roses to digging holes under the fences and potentially even escaping from your yard – Labrador digging in your garden can go from annoying to downright dangerous. Putting a stop to the digging needs to be a priority, for both your sanity and your dog’s safety!

Caught In The Act
Catching your Labrador in the act of digging in your garden is a vital part of being able to correct his behavior.

- Do not yell loudly when you catch your Labrador digging in the garden; instead, redirect him firmly with a “No, no digging.”  It is important that you resist the urge to yell at him; it is certainly frustrating that he is digging; however, yelling at him could result in scaring him.

- When your Labrador stops his digging behavior and comes to you, you should be sure to praise him for stopping.

- If he attempts to go back to digging you should immediately correct him and try to redirect his attention to more positive activities.

Preventative Actions
Prevention truly is the best method of curbing your Labrador’s digging behavior; the more preventative steps that you take, the better your chances are at successfully halting the pesky Labrador digging!

- Where possible, keep your dog indoors during the day when you are at work; this will reduce the time that he has to get himself into trouble and potential danger in the yard.

- Inspect your fence for any holes or gaps underneath it where your Labrador may have already been digging his way to escape and freedom. You may need to reinforce any potential weak areas of your fence by making use of chicken wire or landscaping bricks; by removing the temptation you may be able to reduce his desire to dig around the fence.

- You may need to resort to using small fences to separate your Labrador from the rest of your garden and keep him safely enclosed in an area that he can’t escape from.
